چکیده

We apply the recently developed information distortion method (Comput. Neural Systems 12 (4) (2001) 441) to the analysis of coding by single neurons in the cricket cercal sensory system. This technique allows simultaneous identi5cation of stimulus features and corresponding neural responses. The best approximation of a coding scheme that we obtained suggests that signi5cant information is encoded in spike patterns. We compare this method to the linear stimulus reconstruction approach. Our coarsest nontrivial reproduction completely recovers the stimulus reconstruction results. Further re5nements uncover additional structure, not present in the stimulus reconstruction results. c © 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Information Transmission in Cercal Giant Interneurons Is Unaffected by Axonal Conduction Noise

What are the fundamental constraints on the precision and accuracy with which nervous systems can process information? One constraint must reflect the intrinsic "noisiness" of the mechanisms that transmit information between nerve cells. Most neurons transmit information through the probabilistic generation and propagation of spikes along axons, and recent modeling studies suggest that noise fr...

Hair canopy of cricket sensory system tuned to predator signals.

Filiform hairs located on the cerci of crickets are among the most sensitive sensors in the animal world and enable crickets to sense the faintest air movements generated by approaching predators. While the neurophysiological and biomechanical aspects of this sensory system have been studied independently for several decades, their integration into a coherent framework was wanting. In order to ...

Ontogeny of air-motion sensing in cricket.

Juvenile crickets suffer high rates of mortality by natural predators that they can detect using extremely sensitive air-sensing filiform hairs located on their cerci. Although a huge amount of knowledge has accumulated on the physiology, the neurobiology and the biomechanics of this sensory system in adults, the morphological and functional aspects of air sensing have not been as well studied ...

The cricket cercal system implements delay-line processing.

The cercal sensory system of crickets mediates sensitivity to low-amplitude air currents. The sense organ for this system is a pair of antenna-like abdominal appendages called cerci, each of which is about 1 cm long in normal adult crickets. Although this system has been used extensively as a model system for studying the mechanisms underlying neural coding at the cellular and system levels, no...

Responses of cricket cercal interneurons to realistic naturalistic stimuli in the field.

The ability of the insect cercal system to detect approaching predators has been studied extensively in the laboratory and in the field. Some previous studies have assessed the extent to which sensory noise affects the operational characteristics of the cercal system, but these studies have only been carried out in laboratory settings using white noise stimuli of unrealistic nature. Using a pis...
